Dependence

On September 18th, 2014, the people of Scotland were offered an amazing chance.

On this day, we had the choice to start running our own country.

Our choice of government, our foreign policy, our natural resources, the chance to properly promote our own identity abroad - these could all be ours.

It was a wonderful opportunity, and a credit to the United Kingdom that it allowed this to happen democratically, without any violence or oppression.

Both sides of the campaign were conducted passionately, and remarkably peacefully.

By the morning of September 19th, 2014, the message from the people of Scotland was clear: "No, thanks. We'd rather you looked after this stuff for us."

I view this as a great tragedy - but it was fairly and democratically decided, and we should respect it fully, at least until such a time as something happens which causes a large, clear, shift in opinion.

Please remember the people from the other side of the debate are not your enemy - they're just people who disagree with you.

Best wishes, everyone.
